Highlands and Islands Regional MSP Tim Eagle says lessons must be learnt following the controversial decision-making process on the location of a new school campus on Mull.
The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP made his comments after a petition was launched calling on Argyll and Bute Council to review its decision.
Mr Eagle said: “Given the importance of this project to Mull, and the implications for so many people here, we really do need to recognise that for life-changing decisions like this cost cannot be the only criterion. It is just too important and the consequences too long-lasting for that.
“As the dust settles, for the time being, on the Mull school campus episode we should reflect on why there was so much concern in the island community, and why the process has proven so controversial and divisive. Alarms bells should have rung before things got to this stage.
“For my own part, I will be fighting to ensure that major capital projects like this are better evaluated and that community concerns are more sympathetically treated in the future.”
